A Detailed Look at January 2027 Dates
New Year’s Day: Friday, 1 January
The year starts on a Friday, which gives a natural three-day weekend for many people. New Year’s Day was listed as a holiday in Jharkhand’s 2026 list, but you should confirm it for 2027 once the notification comes. The tithi is Krishna Navami in the Hindu month of Pausha.
Saphala Ekadashi: Sunday, 3 January
Saphala Ekadashi falls in the dark fortnight of Pausha and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees fast and pray. Since it falls on a Sunday, many families can observe it at home without taking leave.
Pradosh Vrat and Masik Shivratri: Tuesday, 5 January
Pradosh Vrat is kept on the 13th tithi (Trayodashi) of each fortnight, in honour of Lord Shiva. On 5 January it falls on a Tuesday, which is known as Bhaum Pradosh. Masik Shivratri, the monthly Shiva night, falls on the same date.
Pausha Amavasya: Thursday, 7 January
This is the new moon day of Pausha. Many families take a holy bath, give charity and remember their ancestors on Amavasya. It also marks the end of the dark fortnight, after which the moon grows again.
Vinayaka Chaturthi: Monday, 11 January
Vinayaka Chaturthi is observed on the fourth day of the bright fortnight and is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Some calendars show the tithi starting late on 11 January, so check your panchang for the exact time.
National Youth Day: Tuesday, 12 January
National Youth Day marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Schools and colleges hold programmes. It is not a public holiday.
Sohrai: expected mid-January
Sohrai is a harvest and cattle festival celebrated by the Santhal, Oraon, Munda and other communities. Homes are cleaned and decorated, and many villages are known for beautiful wall paintings. Cattle are honoured because they are the heart of farming life.
In 2026, Sohrai was listed on 12 and 13 January. For 2027, the state has not yet announced its dates. One holiday-projection site shows 13 January, but please treat this as an estimate until the official notification arrives.
Lohri and Tusu Parab: Thursday, 14 January
Lohri is celebrated on the night before Makar Sankranti, mainly with bonfires, sweets and folk songs. In Jharkhand, 14 January is also linked with Tusu Parab, a harvest festival with its own songs and fairs, especially in the southern districts.
Makar Sankranti and Pongal: 14 and 15 January
Makar Sankranti marks the Sun’s entry into Capricorn (Makara) and the start of longer days. In 2027, the Sun enters Makara late on 14 January, so many panchangs place the main observance and the holy-bath time (Punya Kaal) on Friday, 15 January. Others, including some regional lists, keep 14 January. Jharkhand’s state list showed 14 January in 2026, so wait for the 2027 notification to see which date applies for leave.
Traditional foods include sesame (til) and jaggery sweets, khichdi and pitha. Kharmas ends with the Sun’s entry into Makara, and weddings can restart.
Pausha Putrada Ekadashi: Tuesday, 19 January
This Ekadashi falls in the bright fortnight of Pausha. Most panchangs show the vrat on Tuesday, 19 January. A few lists show 18 January, because the tithi begins that evening. Choose the date your family or pandit follows.
Pradosh Vrat (Budha): Wednesday, 20 January
The second Pradosh Vrat of the month falls on a Wednesday, which is called Budha Pradosh. It is the Trayodashi of the bright fortnight.
Pausha Purnima: Friday, 22 January
Pausha Purnima is the full moon of Pausha. It is also called Shakambhari Purnima in some traditions. Many people take a holy bath and donate food or warm clothes. In several parts of North India, the Magh month bathing tradition begins around this date.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti: Saturday, 23 January
In 2026, Netaji Jayanti and Basant Panchami fell on the same date. In 2027 they separate. Netaji Jayanti stays on 23 January, which is a Saturday this year and also the fourth Saturday, so banks are closed anyway. Basant Panchami moves to 11 February 2027.
Sakat Chauth (Sankashti Chaturthi): Monday, 25 January
Sakat Chauth, also called Tilkut Chaturthi, is kept on the fourth day of the dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Magha. Devotees fast during the day and break the fast after moonrise. Moonrise time changes by city; it is about 9:12 PM in Delhi, so check your local time.
Republic Day: Tuesday, 26 January
Republic Day is a national gazetted holiday that marks the day the Constitution came into force in 1950. In 2027 it falls on a Tuesday. If you can take Monday, 25 January off, you get a four-day break from Saturday, 23 January to Tuesday, 26 January.
Kalashtami: Friday, 29 January
Kalashtami is the monthly observance on the eighth day of the dark fortnight, dedicated to Lord Kalabhairava.
Martyrs’ Day: Saturday, 30 January
Martyrs’ Day remembers Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary. It is observed with a silence of two minutes in many places and is not a public holiday.
January 2027 Tithi and Nakshatra Guide
Tithi and nakshatra change during the day. The table shows the tithi at sunrise for India, with the Hindu month under the common North Indian (Purnimanta) system.
| Date | Day | Tithi | Hindu month | Nakshatra |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January | Friday | Krishna Navami | Pausha | Chitra |
| 3 January | Sunday | Krishna Ekadashi | Pausha | Vishakha |
| 7 January | Thursday | Krishna Amavasya | Pausha | Purva Ashadha |
| 12 January | Tuesday | Shukla Chaturthi | Pausha | Shatabhisha |
| 14 January | Thursday | Shukla Shashthi | Pausha | Uttara Bhadrapada |
| 16 January | Saturday | Shukla Ashtami | Pausha | Ashwini |
| 17 January | Sunday | Shukla Navami | Pausha | Bharani |
| 19 January | Tuesday | Shukla Ekadashi | Pausha | Rohini |
| 20 January | Wednesday | Shukla Trayodashi | Pausha | Mrigashira |
| 22 January | Friday | Shukla Purnima | Pausha | Punarvasu |
| 26 January | Tuesday | Krishna Panchami | Magha | Not listed |
Two more terms are worth knowing. Panchak is a group of five days when the Moon passes through the last five nakshatras. One panchang lists Panchak from about 10 to 15 January 2027, which matches the nakshatras above. Many families avoid starting new construction or buying wood then. Please check start and end times in your own panchang. Paksha means a fortnight: Shukla is the bright half and Krishna is the dark half.

How to Use This Calendar
- Government employees: Read your department’s circular once the 2027 notification arrives. Sohrai and Makar Sankranti are state-specific, so they may not match another state’s list.
- Bank customers: Plan transactions around 9 and 23 January and around Republic Day.
- Students and job seekers: Mark 26 January as the only fixed national holiday. Check your school or board circular for local closures.
- Families planning weddings: The first muhurat is 15 January. Book venues early for 24, 30 and 31 January.
- Business owners: Plan staffing and deliveries around Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Republic Day.
- Devotees: Use the tithi table for Ekadashi, Pradosh, Amavasya, Purnima and Sakat Chauth.
Jharkhand Calendar vs National Calendar
National holidays like Republic Day apply across India. Jharkhand’s calendar adds tribal and regional days, such as Sohrai and Tusu Parab in January, followed by Sarhul in spring and Karma Puja in September. That is why a state calendar fills gaps that a general national calendar misses.
