Detailed Look at February 2027 Festivals

Shattila Ekadashi: 2 February (Tuesday)

Shattila Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Magha Krishna Paksha. The tithi starts at about 8:42 AM on 1 February and ends at about 11:11 AM on 2 February, so the fast is kept on 2 February. The name refers to sesame (til), which devotees use in six ways: in bathing, as a paste, in offerings to the fire, in water offerings, in food and in charity. Worship is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The fast is traditionally broken the next morning, 3 February, after sunrise.

Mauni Amavasya: 6 February (Saturday)

Mauni Amavasya is the new moon day of the Magha month and one of the most important bathing days of the year. Devotees take a holy dip in a river at dawn, observe silence (maun) for part of the day, give charity and remember ancestors. The Amavasya tithi runs from about 5:35 PM on 5 February to about 7:55 PM on 6 February. Because it is a Saturday, it falls on the first Saturday of the month, so banks are open.

Vasant Panchami (Saraswati Puja): 11 February (Thursday)

Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. The Panchami tithi begins at about 3:04 AM on 11 February and ends at 3:18 AM on 12 February. The puja is done in the forenoon, between sunrise and midday. Sample windows for 11 February are about 7:03 AM to 12:35 PM in Delhi and about 6:09 AM to 11:50 AM in Kolkata. Ranchi’s sunrise falls between the two, so use a Ranchi panchang for the exact window.

In Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, schools and colleges commonly hold Saraswati Puja, and in neighbouring Bengal and Odisha families install images of the goddess and set up community pandals. Many families begin children’s first writing, called Vidyarambh or Hate Khori, on this day. In Deoghar, the Tilak Utsav at Baba Baidyanath Dham is linked with this period (see Jharkhand-specific observances below).

Ganesh Jayanti: 10 February (Wednesday)

Ganesh Jayanti, also called Magha Vinayaka Chaturthi or Tilkund Chaturthi, falls the day before Vasant Panchami. The Chaturthi tithi runs from about 12:49 AM on 10 February to about 1:34 AM on 11 February. The midday puja window listed for Delhi is about 12:16 PM to 2:20 PM.

Ratha Saptami and Kumbha Sankranti: 13 February (Saturday)

Ratha Saptami, also called Surya Saptami or Achala Saptami, honours the Sun God. Devotees offer water to the rising sun, light lamps and worship facing east. The Saptami tithi runs from about 1:29 AM on 13 February to about 12:36 AM on 14 February. The same day is Kumbha Sankranti, when the Sun moves from Capricorn into Aquarius, and Narmada Jayanti. It is also the second Saturday of the month, so banks are closed.

Bhishma Ashtami: 14 February (Sunday)

Bhishma Ashtami is observed on Magha Shukla Ashtami in memory of Bhishma Pitamah of the Mahabharata. Many devotees offer water and sesame to ancestors on this day. It is also Masik Durgashtami, the monthly Ashtami dedicated to Goddess Durga.

Jaya Ekadashi: 17 February (Wednesday)

Jaya Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of Magha Shukla Paksha. The tithi begins at about 8:20 PM on 16 February and ends at about 5:32 PM on 17 February, and both Smarta and Vaishnava traditions keep the fast on 17 February. The fast is broken on the morning of 18 February. Guru Pradosh Vrat and Bhishma Dwadashi follow on 18 February.

Magha Purnima and Guru Ravidas Jayanti: 20 February (Saturday)

Magha Purnima is the full moon day of Magha and marks the end of the month-long Magha bathing period that begins on Paush Purnima. The Purnima tithi begins at 7:59 AM on 20 February and ends at 4:52 AM on 21 February, with moonrise around 5:46 PM in Delhi. Because the tithi sits within 20 February, most calendars list that date. Devotees bathe in rivers, fast and give charity. The same day is Guru Ravidas Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the saint and social reformer Sant Ravidas, who is remembered for his message of equality and devotion. As the third Saturday, banks are open.

Phalguna Begins: 21 February (Sunday)

In the purnimanta calendar followed across north India, Phalguna starts on 21 February. This is the month that leads to Maha Shivratri (6 March) and Holi (22 March).

Dwijapriya Sankashti Chaturthi: 24 February (Wednesday)

Sankashti Chaturthi is the monthly fast for Lord Ganesha on Krishna Chaturthi. Devotees fast through the day and break the fast after sighting the moon at night. The moonrise time depends on your city, so check a local panchang.

Ashtami Observances: 27 and 28 February

Masik Krishna Janmashtami falls on 27 February, and Kalashtami and Janaki Jayanti on 28 February, as the Phalguna Krishna Ashtami runs across both days. The 27th is also the fourth Saturday, so banks are closed.

Two notes for readers who compare years. First, Vijaya Ekadashi, which was in February in 2026, falls in early March in 2027 because it belongs to Phalguna Krishna Paksha. Second, Maha Shivratri is on 6 March 2027, not in February.

Eclipses in February 2027: Is Sutak Applicable?

Two eclipses occur close to the new and full moon in February 2027. Neither calls for Sutak in India, according to the sources reviewed.

EclipseDateTypeIndia visibilitySutak
Solar eclipse6 February 2027AnnularNot visible from New Delhi; the path covers South America, the South Atlantic and West AfricaNot applicable
Lunar eclipse21 February 2027 (early morning IST)PenumbralNot visible to the naked eye; timings listed for New Delhi are 2:43 AM to 6:42 AM, maximum at 4:43 AMNot applicable

The solar eclipse falls on Mauni Amavasya, so the holy bath and charity proceed as normal. Penumbral eclipses are faint, and the panchang source used here marks Sutak as not applicable. If your family follows different customs, ask your priest.

Jharkhand-Specific Observances

Tilak Utsav at Baba Baidyanath Dham, Deoghar. Around Basant Panchami, pilgrims from Mithila (Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Madhubani in Bihar) travel to Deoghar for the Tilak ceremony, which symbolises the prelude to the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It leads up to Maha Shivratri (6 March 2027). Devotees sing kirtans through the night, and some throw first-harvest grains on the temple roof as an offering. Confirm the exact day with the temple authorities, as it is not fixed by a single tithi in the sources reviewed.

Saraswati Puja in schools. Schools and colleges across Jharkhand commonly celebrate Saraswati Puja around Vasant Panchami. If you are a parent, check your school’s circular for the holiday or event schedule, because a school’s plan can differ from the general calendar.

Mage Parab. Mage Parab is the main festival of the Ho community and is also observed by the Munda and Bhumij people. It is held in the month of Magh, which in 2027 runs until Magha Purnima on 20 February, according to the purnimanta calendar. Exact days vary by community and village, so check locally.

Official state holidays. The Government of Jharkhand issues its holiday list under the Negotiable Instruments Act by notification. The 2026 list was issued as notification no. 10/SA.AV.03-03/7244 of 2025. A 2027 notification had not been found at the time of writing, so there is no confirmed gazetted or restricted holiday for February 2027 yet. Watch for the official list towards the end of 2026.

Bank Holidays in February 2027

Banks in Jharkhand follow the RBI pattern of closing on Sundays and on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month. The RBI’s official 2027 holiday list had not been checked at the time of writing, so confirm any additional regional closures with your branch.

DateDayReason
7 FebruarySundayWeekly holiday
13 FebruarySaturday2nd Saturday
14 FebruarySundayWeekly holiday
21 FebruarySundayWeekly holiday
27 FebruarySaturday4th Saturday
28 FebruarySundayWeekly holiday

That gives six closure days and 22 working days. Saturdays on 6 and 20 February are working days even though they are Mauni Amavasya and Magha Purnima. Plan cheque, loan or cash deposits before 13 February and again before 27 February. Online banking and UPI work as usual on all days.

Jharkhand Calendar vs National Calendar

National holidays stay the same across India, but the state calendar shows a different mix each month. February 2027 has no central public holiday, and Republic Day (26 January) is the only central holiday close to it. What it does have is an unusual density of Panchang observances and a few region-specific traditions such as Saraswati Puja in schools, the Tilak Utsav in Deoghar and Mage Parab. This is why a local calendar fills the gaps that a national list leaves.
