A Closer Look at the April 2027 Festivals
Chaitra Navratri and Hindu New Year: 7 April
Chaitra Shukla Pratipada begins the new Hindu lunar year and the nine-day Chaitra Navratri. Families install the kalash, begin daily worship of Goddess Durga and, in many homes, keep the fast. The same day is celebrated as Ugadi in the south and Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra. Navratri runs from 7 to 15 April, with Durga Ashtami on 14 April and Ram Navami on 15 April.
Sarhul: 9 April (Expected)
Sarhul is Jharkhand’s best-known tribal festival, a spring celebration of the Sal tree and of nature, regarded as the start of the tribal new year. It follows Chaitra Shukla Tritiya, which falls on 9 April. Villages hold worship in the sacred sal grove, and towns such as Ranchi see processions with traditional dance and music. Local committees and village priests sometimes set exact timings, so watch for local announcements.
Ambedkar Jayanti, Mesha Sankranti and Baisakhi: 14 April
Ambedkar Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and falls on 14 April every year. In 2027 it coincides with Mesha Sankranti, the Sun’s entry into Aries, and with Baisakhi, the harvest festival and Punjabi new year. Mesha Sankranti also ends Kharmas, the period when weddings are traditionally avoided.
Ram Navami: 15 April
Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama on Chaitra Shukla Navami. The tithi continues until about 1:21 PM in the New Delhi calendar, so many families hold the main puja around midday. Processions and Mahavir flags are common sights in Jharkhand towns.
Papmochani and Kamada Ekadashi: 2 and 17 April
Papmochani Ekadashi on 2 April closes the previous lunar year, and Kamada Ekadashi on 17 April is the first Ekadashi of the new year. Both are Vishnu fasts in which rice and grains are avoided. The fast is broken the next morning during the Dwadashi parana window, so check the parana time for your city.
Mahavir Jayanti: 19 April
The birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, falls on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi. Jain communities mark it with temple prayers, processions and charity. It was a Jharkhand government holiday in 2026, so a holiday is likely again in 2027.
Hanuman Jayanti and Chaitra Purnima: 20 April
Hanuman Jayanti coincides with the full moon of Chaitra. Devotees visit Hanuman temples, recite the Hanuman Chalisa and take out processions. The Purnima tithi runs past midnight into the early hours of 21 April.
Pradosh Vrat and Sankashti Chaturthi
Ravi Pradosh falls twice, on 4 and 18 April, both Sundays, which many devotees consider favourable for health. Sankashti Chaturthi on 24 April is broken only after moonrise, about 10:27 PM in New Delhi, and moonrise in Ranchi will be earlier, so use a Ranchi-specific timing.

Bank Holidays in April 2027
Banks in Jharkhand are closed on all Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays. Based on that rule and the expected holidays, April 2027 looks like this:
| Date | Day | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 April | Thursday | Annual closing of accounts (banks only) |
| 4, 11, 18, 25 April | Sundays | Weekly closure |
| 10 April | Saturday | Second Saturday |
| 14 April | Wednesday | Ambedkar Jayanti (expected; confirm with your branch) |
| 24 April | Saturday | Fourth Saturday |
Some other April days, such as Sarhul on 9 April, Ram Navami on 15 April and Mahavir Jayanti on 19 April, are likely to be closures for some banks or circles. The Reserve Bank of India publishes its list for the next year around the end of the preceding year, so verify with your own branch. Net banking and UPI continue to work on bank holidays. With the financial year closing on 1 April, it helps to finish pending banking work in the last week of March.
Wedding Dates and Kharmas in April 2027
The Sun is in Pisces from 15 March to 14 April, a period called Kharmas, during which weddings and housewarmings are traditionally avoided. Mesha Sankranti on 14 April ends it. The first wedding muhurats of the season follow soon after.
| Date | Day |
|---|---|
| 18 April | Sunday |
| 19 April | Monday |
| 21 April | Wednesday |
| 23 April | Friday |
| 24 April | Saturday |
| 25 April | Sunday |
| 26 April | Monday |
| 27 April | Tuesday |
| 28 April | Wednesday |
These dates follow standard Panchang rules for New Delhi. They are a starting point, and the final date should be confirmed by a priest against both horoscopes. Families planning an April wedding should book venues early, since all nine dates are packed into the last two weeks of the month.
April 2027 Compared With April 2026
If you used last year’s April calendar, do not reuse its dates. Many festivals have moved by about three weeks.
| Observance | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Hindu New Year and Chaitra Navratri | 19 March | 7 April |
| Sarhul | 21 March | 9 April (expected) |
| Ram Navami | 27 March | 15 April |
| Mahavir Jayanti | 31 March | 19 April |
| Hanuman Jayanti | 2 April | 20 April |
| Good Friday | 3 April | 26 March |
| Akshaya Tritiya | 19 April | 9 May |
| Ambedkar Jayanti | 14 April | 14 April |
Normally, lunar festivals move about eleven days earlier each year. This time they move later because 2026 contained an extra lunar month, Adhik Maas (17 May to 15 June), which pushed the new year back by roughly three weeks. Only fixed-date observances such as Ambedkar Jayanti stay put.
